Require a password to open a PDF

Create an AES-256 encrypted copy of a PDF. Keep the password somewhere safe and check that the recipient can open the new file.

Choose a password you can keep safe

The form requires at least six characters and matching confirmation. Use a longer, unique passphrase rather than a common word, name or date that someone could guess.

Rebuildfree does not receive or store the password and cannot recover it for you. Keep it in a password manager or another suitable place before sending the document.

Send the file and password separately

Give the recipient the password through a different channel from the PDF. Ask them to open the protected copy before you remove an unencrypted copy they still need.

Check access to the encrypted copy

The tool reopens the encrypted result with the password and checks the page count before download. Open the downloaded PDF in another reader and enter the password yourself.

Check the pages, links and forms the recipient needs. The unencrypted source remains on your device, so store both copies according to how sensitive their contents are.

Remove content before encrypting it

Password protection controls access to the unopened file. Once someone has the password, they may be able to copy, print, capture or share its contents.

Encryption does not remove sensitive information. If a detail must not reach the recipient, redact it first, check the redacted copy and then protect that copy with a password.
